Wilson Center Appoints Annette Freeman to New Role as Education & Engagement Coordinator

The Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College is pleased to announce Annette Freeman as Education and Engagement Coordinator. In this new position, she will create, coordinate, and oversee the Center’s powerful and recognized arts education and dance residencies, bringing world-renowned entertainment to Wilmington. She will collaborate with New Hanover and Pender County public school systems, Cape Fear Community College, University of North Carolina Wilmington, as well as regional community partners to provide arts education, access, and workshops. She will also oversee grants and funding arts initiatives and coordinate the Broadway for a Better World program.

“I’m honored and delighted to have the opportunity to bridge the arts with our growing local community. My intention is to have everyone in Wilmington and the surrounding community that desires to experience spectacular performances at The Wilson Center get the chance to do so,” said Annette.

Annette is an Emmy® award-winning producer, journalist, and communications professional. In her career, she has produced documentaries for NBC, MSNBC, A & E, Discovery Channel, TV One, Sundance Channel, PBS, and MTV World. Annette co-chaired NBCU’s Black Professional Alliance Retention and Recruitment Committee and was a former Editorial Board subcommittee member of the News division’s Diversity Council.  Annette was also an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, a visiting professor at NBC News/New York Film Academy’s Digital Journalism Program, and Emerson College in Boston. She is a graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism where she was awarded the John Patterson award for Best Documentary, a graduate of Howard University, and a member of Alpha Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

“As the first Community Engagement Specialist at the Wilson Center, I had the opportunity to assist in the development of the vision for this position and the qualifications necessary to be a successful community liaison for the Wilson Center,” said Tracy Wilkes, former Community Engagement Specialist at the Wilson Center and Founder/Former Executive Director of DREAMS of Wilmington, “It’s a complex job with a lot of moving parts and I can’t think of a more qualified person than Annette Freeman! She’s got it all: amazing organizational skills, a warm and open personality, and a deep knowledge of the entertainment business— I think Ms. Freeman will do an outstanding job, the Wilson Center and our community is very lucky that she decided to make Wilmington, NC her home.”
